Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging London 2021 will reconnect the industry when it returns to Olympia on 1 and 2 December. As the UK’s premier packaging event, the show will feature over 180 international exhibitors, and cover four key sectors: food, drinks, beauty & cosmetics, and fashion & accessories. Over the course of two days, it will provide an opportunity for visitors to experience the latest technologies, products, and innovation first-hand, learn from the brightest minds in the sector and network with valuable contacts.
New Product Launches
As consumers become increasingly conscious of their carbon footprint and the excessive use of raw materials, this year’s show floor reflects this momentum, featuring a host of eco-friendly innovation and product designs. For example, Aegg Creative Packaging will present its extended range of glass packaging. It has added over 20 new jars and bottles for the food and drinks industries which are all fully recyclable, reusable, and environmentally friendly.
In a similar vein, Capardoni will release its Hilo 50 Green eco-friendly jar, made from up to 90 percent recycled glass. This new product joins the existing Catarina 10ml and 15ml bottle range, which can be combined with different accessories and decorated with several techniques, such as silk screen printing, hot stamping, metallisation, and varnishing.
KAPAG Board and Paper will be launching its Oppboga Resilient Plus – a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics for use outside, that is recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable. The water-resistant paperboard defies moist and wet environments, and can be used for electrical campaign signage, event waste bins, bollard covers, or public transport advertisements.
At the event, Favini will further expand its ‘Crush’ paper range, with ‘Crush Cocoa’. The paper’s ingredients include 15 percent cocoa bean husk residue, committing the company to sustainable and responsible production. At lower thicknesses, the paper can be used for premium printing, and luxury packaging at a higher grammage. The ‘Crush’ range is produced using 100 percent green energy, and the content includes 40 percent post-consumer recycled waste.
Italian packaging firm, Valmatic, has further developed the idea of sustainability within its latest product range, Paperdose. The new product is a recyclable solution to single-use packaging and can be used for the pharmaceutical, veterinary, food, and chemical industries. The thermoformed design can be recycled along with paper to reduce waste to landfill, which returns raw materials to the production cycle.
Danish company, Natupharma, will release its patent-pending ECO packaging product live at the show. Made from sugar cane and dubbed ‘green plastic’, the development is CO2 neutral and fully biodegradable within 10 years. The containers can be used for a wide range of industry solutions, such as food supplements and sports nutrition.
For beauty brands, Sampling Innovations will reveal Ticket Scent, its container designed to help consumers test new products. The solution is produced with mono-material laminates that facilitate recycling and can dispense a single sample to a customer. The containers are designed to be easily included on store shelves or adapted to specific displays. Sampling Innovations has also released a second innovation – the Easy-Dose sampling system. This allows new creams and lotions to be easily tested by bending to release the entire contents in one motion.
Futamura will showcase its range of NatureFlex™ renewable and compostable cellulose films for flexible packaging. The films are produced from sustainable wood pulp, harvested from responsibly managed plantations, and offer an effective barrier to aroma, gas, and moisture. They are an ideal alternative to unrecyclable packaging applications, such as twist wrap, sachets, coffee pods, or ready meal lids.
Bisong will be displaying its range of eco-friendly travel pouches, cosmetics bags, and tote bags, designed to reduce the amount of virgin resources entering the supply chain. In line with the packaging industry’s focus on improved sustainability, the products feature Bio-Cotton, Rayon, and Viscose. Every product is produced with a GRS certificate for full traceability of the chain, certifying the recycled nature of each item.
Label Form will present its labels produced in accordance with the Prismm Zero Foil 2 Landfill Scheme. The initiative has been created to reduce the amount of metallised polyester waste being sent to landfill. The service includes numerous special features, including hot foil printing and varnish embellishments, and can be precisely matched to the needs of the packaging industry.
Alongside a busy show floor, Packaging Innovations and Luxury Packaging London will host a curated seminar programme designed to arm visitors with the latest industry thinking.
Just like the show floor, the topic of sustainability will be a key focus running throughout this year’s seminar content. New for 2021, the £10bn Debate will explore the key governmental legislation designed to address key issues including the Deposit Return Scheme and Extended Producer Responsibility. The regulation brings a raft of new costs and challenges, and the event will seek to address how these can be met by brands, suppliers, and agencies.
Joining the curated seminar programme will be Rosie Milsom, Atom Brands’ Global Head at NPD, who is speaking about the essence of packaging design. Rosie’s simple philosophy – to select and produce the best liquids and package them to reflect the quality contained within – can be taken on board by every brand owner or packaging designer.
Andrew Lawrence, Executive Creative Director at Elmwood, will also provide his expert analysis of how tension can be utilised by the packaging industry. In his seminar, he will discuss how tension can spark dialogue, connection, and community, leading to a stronger relationship between a company and its customers. With brands often failing to identify their power, Andrew will explore how, when properly managed, organisations can capitalise on consumer tensions through packaging to form productive and concrete partnerships.
Emma Thornton, Founder and Owner of True Skincare, will address the connection between the packaging industry and eco-conscious production. Due to the high quantity of raw materials required for mass production, the packaging industry is often seen as environmentally problematic. Yet, by reducing reliance on virgin natural resources, and increased usage of recycled or reusable products, Emma will demonstrate how the industry can work together to decrease its carbon footprint, without reducing the quality of products.
The seminar content will further feature specially curated content from the Pentawards, the world’s leading packaging design competition, addressing the latest design and consumer trends. This will give attendees an edge on their rivals, by receiving in-depth insight of emerging patterns within a highly competitive market.
Several interactive features will also take place to showcase innovation in practice and offer visitors the chance to get instant feedback on their own packaging designs.
The Innovation Showcase will see 10 finalists display their ground-breaking solutions, in a bid to win the coveted prize of ’Most Innovative Pack’ and will be voted for by visitors.
The ever-popular Packaging Consultancy Clinic will return to the show. The Clinic provides visitors with an opportunity to receive one-to-one guidance on any issue or packaging concern. They can discuss all kinds of industry problems such as packaging design, transportation, sustainability, or recycling, all of which can be addressed by talking to the panel of experts.
Finally, the show will host a number of cutting-edge ‘Innovation Labs’. Guests will learn about the newest packaging materials available that will define projects in the coming year, directly from the companies responsible for bringing them to market.
