Reaching new heights to fundraise for Ukraine

Employees from Eurofins Food & Water Testing UK & Ireland pushed themselves to the extreme by undertaking the ‘3 Peaks Challenge’, as part of a fundraising campaign for the Red Cross’s Ukraine appeal.

Two teams of eight from Eurofins embarked on a climb up the three biggest mountains in England, Scotland and Wales, a feat which has seen them raise over £10,000 for the charity which supports those directly impacted by the war.

Starting with Ben Nevis (Scotland), moving to Scafell Pike (England) and concluding with Snowdon (Wales), the trek totals 23 miles and ascends 3064 metres (10,052ft).

One of the teams completed the challenge in three days, over the course of the weekend. The other team pushed themselves even further and sought to complete the entire journey in just 24 hours.

The fundraising page raised over £6,500 in direct donations, and another £3,700 in funds were made directly by Eurofins as part of its pledge to donate £10 per mile for each person who completed the challenge. In addition, it covered all travel and accommodation expenses ensuring 100% of the funds raised were donated directly to the Ukraine appeal.

Liz Moran, Director of Technical & Quality at Eurofins Food & Water Testing UK & Ireland, said:

“The Friday found us sliding down the snow on Ben Nevis on our bottoms. By Saturday we were slapping on the factor 50 before going up Scafell Pike. Sunday on Snowdon saw us in sunshine and swirling mists, with seagulls dive-bombing our sandwiches at the summit. We were regaled with stories and mountaineering tips by our guide Mike, who kept us all on the straight and narrow (and did his best to persuade some people that wearing shorts on Ben Nevis is not a good idea!)”.

“There were a few sore knees, and lots of aching muscles, but it was an adventure we’ll never forget. We laughed a lot to ease the pain, made new friends and precious memories, but most importantly we all came together with the same objective to raise money to help the people of Ukraine”.

With 6.6 million Ukrainians having left the country, and another 8 million displaced internally, the Red Cross is working tirelessly to bring aid and support to as many individuals as possible. Based in Ukraine and neighbouring countries, they are providing food, water, shelter, first aid, medicine and warm clothes.

Mark Carnaghan, Managing Director of Eurofins Food & Water Testing UK & Ireland, explained:

“We are all extremely proud of the team for coming together for this incredible cause. As a company, we have watched the devastating events taking place in Ukraine and we wanted to do our part in helping to make a difference. Having spoken to various members of the team who completed the trek, I know it was extremely challenging – the route itself, the weather, the exhaustion – but to know they have done this for a worthwhile cause is fantastic. Having so far raised over £6,500 is a massive achievement, and we do hope this brings some aid and support to those who need it most”.

So far, the Red Cross has reached 2.1 million people to provide life-saving aid, and have provided training to another 42,000 people, giving them the first aid skills to protect their loved ones, if necessary. When Ukrainian families are seeking refuge in the UK, the British Red Cross is providing them with psychosocial items, such as phones, SIM cards and chargers, allowing them to communicate with loved ones, and debit cards with a one-off cash sum to enable them to purchase essential items.
