The Most Awarded Mezcal of 2021
Names Montserrat Franco as Global Brand Ambassador.
The Lost Explorer Mezcal, the sustainably crafted and most awarded mezcal of 2021, announces Montserrat Franco has joined as Global Brand Ambassador. With over 15 years’ experience in the spirits and wine industry, Montserrat is a passionate agave expert and sommelier, with a rich depth of knowledge and experience. An advocate for the bartending community around the world, she leverages her social media platform (@agavelady) to empower diversity, sustainability and education in the agave spirits industry.
In her role as Global Brand Ambassador, Montserrat will lead brand advocacy, education and training across the USA, Mexico, Europe and Australia. A certified Master Mezcalier, Montserrat was also twice awarded the T distinctive in Tequila by the Tequila Regulatory Council (CRT), holds a Court of Master Sommelier and is an ISSP-CSP Certified Sustainability Professional.
Speaking on her appointment to the role, Montserrat commented: “I felt connected with The Lost Explorer Mezcal for many reasons. I was deeply interested in mezcal and how to make it sustainable for new generations to come; I found my answers when I met Maestro Mezcalero Fortino Ramos and his daughter Xitlali, who is training to become the next generation female mezcalera. In my humble opinion, Maestro Fortino is bringing to mezcal making a bright new future that is beneficial for our planet. We love mezcal but we also need to think about responsible practices for the environment and our community, and I am honoured to join The Lost Explorer Mezcal and be part of this journey.”
The Lost Explorer Mezcal was founded with a pledge to Celebrate the Earth and with a deep commitment to the sustainable production of high-quality, artisanal mezcal in a manner that benefits the local mezcal-producing community of Oaxaca. This Earth Month, The Lost Explorer Mezcal announces a deepening of its partnership with charity Voice for Nature Foundation, continuing and extending their support of local impact projects in Oaxaca. Their partnership with Isla Urbana will see the implementation of further additional rainwater harvesting systems in the remote areas of San Jose Tenango, Oaxaca while the partnership with Sikanda, specifically their female empowerment programme, will provide seed capital funding for essential supplies and equipment for up to 30 women-led local businesses, building on the 14 businesses that received support in 2021.
The Lost Explorer Mezcal’s partnership with Voice for Nature Foundation comes from a place of contributing beyond their own business goals and supporting a more sustainable future for the local environment and indigenous communities of Oaxaca.
The Lost Explorer Mezcal’s three uniquely profiled varietals – Espadín, Tobalá and Salmiana – are available for purchase in select bars, restaurants and high-end retailers in California, New York, Texas, Florida and Colorado, as well as Mexico, the UK, Greece and Australia, with further US and European expansion planned over the coming months.
